This rare first edition of Percival Lowell’s second book on the red planet is from the personal library of the late Charles Eugene Banks (1852-1932), dramatic editor for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in the early 1900s.
This book is part of a formidable collection, once owned by Charles Banks, that has been in the careful custody of the same family since the early 1930s. Shortly after Banks passed away, a member of his family offered several books to a family friend who had an interest in them. This handsome copy of an important treatise on the early exploration of Mars contains particular reference to the canals on its surface.
Lowell Percival, the author of Mars and Its Canals, moved to Flagstaff, Arizona in 1894 where he founded the Lowell Conservatory to study Mars. For the next fifteen years Lowell studied Mars extensively, making intricate drawings of the surface markings as he perceived them. During this period he also formed the beginning of the effort that led to the discovery of Pluto fourteen years after his death.
